Landscape Characteristics Affecting Small Mammal Occurrence in Heterogeneous Olive Grove Agro-Ecosystems

چکیده
Understanding how small mammals (SM) are associated with environmental characteristics in olive groves is important to identify potential threats agriculture and assess the overall conservation value functioning of agro-ecosystems. Here, we provide first insights on this topic applied traditional northeast (NE) Portugal by assessing landscape attributes that determine SM occurrence, focusing one species concern (Microtus cabrerae Thomas 1906) often perceived as a pest olives lusitanicus Gerbe 1879). Based genetic non-invasive sampling 51 surrounding habitats, identified seven rodent insectivore. Occupancy modelling indicated were generally less detected within than habitats. The vulnerable M. reached mean occupancy (95% CI) 0.77 (0.61–0.87), while stood at 0.37 (0.24–0.52). was more likely occur land mosaics high density agricultural field edges, pastureland patches. Overall, our study suggests complex structure spatial heterogeneity traditionally managed grove agro-ecosystems may favor occurrence species-rich communities, possibly including well-established populations importance, keeping relatively low rates.

Small mammal herbivory: Feedbacks that help maintain desertified ecosystems
We tested the hypothesis that herbivores contribute to feedbacks maintaining arid ecosystems in a degraded state. We studied small mammal herbivory on a subshrub, broom snakeweed (Gutierrezia sarothrae), and perennial grasses at three sites: (1) ungrazed black grama (Bouteloua eriopoda) grassland; (2) grassland degraded by intense short-duration grazing; and (3) mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa) c...

متن کاملHost-Parasite Associations in Small Mammal Communities in Semiarid Savanna Ecosystems of East Africa.
Despite the established importance of rodents as reservoirs of vector-borne zoonoses in East Africa, there is relatively limited information regarding the infestation parameters and host associations of ectoparasites that vector many such pathogens among small mammals in this region. Between 2009 and 2013, small mammals were live-trapped in the semiarid savanna of Kenya. A subset of these indiv...
متن کاملExploiting Diversity to Manage Weeds in Agro-ecosystems
Weed management systems that rely less on chemical control are needed globally. Next to curative chemical weed control, there are other ways of tackling weed problems, such as (a) reduction of the weed seed bank in the soil, (b) reduced recruitment of weed seeds from the soil seed bank, and (c) strengthening the relative competitive ability of the crop. A number of case studies are presented in...
